What careers can come of a major in comparative literature?
Q. I am thinking about majoring in comparative literature or something having to do with different cultures. I would like some ideas on where I could intern or volunteer now; also, I'd like some ideas of what careers can come of thisin the future. Answers from people who have experience with this type of major would be preferred.

A. Teaching, acting, writing and critic. I don't see anything in anthropology and diplomacy would be a bit of a push unless you do a minor in political science. If you have a second or third language, you could do a moderns degree with minors in sociology and political science and then open up all fields mentioned above..

How do you convert Latin adjectives into the comparative and superlative?
Q. Specifically: small and big. How do you convert those two words into the comparative and the superlative? What is the rule? Where can it be found?
Asked by Cdell - Sun Nov 23 15:02:35 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. parvus, parva, -um ... small, little minor, -or, -us ... smaller minimus, -a, -um ... smallest, least magnus, magna, -um ... large, great, big major, -or, -us ... larger, greater maximus, -a, -um ... greatest, largest These are irregular in form. They do not follow the ordinary rule. Ordinarily it would be as follows: longus, longa, -um ... long, tall longior, -ior, -ius ... longer, taller longissimus, -a, -um ... longest, tallest Notice the "-ior, -ius" in the comparative and the "-issimus, -a, -um". Thesee are the usual or normal endings. You can find a fuller explanation in any good Latin grammar book.

How does China's natural resources result in a absolute or comparative advantage for the country?
Q. China's Natural Resources. Explain how the items might result in an absolute or comparative advantage for the country.
Asked by Emily - Tue Sep 23 22:04:09 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. A country is said to have an absolute advantage in the production of a good or service if they are able to make it at a lower cost than another country. For example, if it costs $20 to make a chair in USA, but only $12 to make the same chair in China, then we would say that the Chinese economy has an absolute advantage in the production of that chair. Therefore we should allow people in China to make these chairs, as the finished product will be cheaper for consumers. If all international trade followed this theory, then production would increasingly be isolated in countries with low wages. Only highly specialised items would be able to be produced in countries with high wages. This would result in lower overall world production, which… [cont.]

But i know there isn't much option for my current major right now, which is philosophy and possibly comparative literature as well. Is it even possible to get a decent-paying job with those degrees? A. Philosophy is a degree you can literally take anywhere, The skills it teaches you are the natural leadership abilities that are in high demand in todays work place (communication, logic, conflict resolution, problem solving, and an ability to adapt to any enviornment). Particularly, philosophy is a good preparation for law school because you deal with ethical as well as metaphysical issues.

How do comparative zoologists know that a fossil is different than known living species?
Q. Sometimes, comparative zoologists and acheologists determine that a bone fragment found constitutes an entire different species. Can this really be deduced from a buried bone fragment sometimes millions of years old? Are these guesses or fact? Also, if there are no complete skeletons of certain animals (such as some dinosaurs) how can zoologists really know that some dug-up bone fragment belongs to an entirely different species?
Asked by misoma5 - Sun Mar 25 14:37:03 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The answer is in your question: comparative zoologist. They find a feature which is not present in any living animal, it may be quite minute, like the small bump on a bone where the tendons would have attached, but the proportions are different from anything else. Then, the idea is to rule out a freak deviation or an infirmity or the result of a wound that healed strangely; and again, the archaeologist know what to look for to rule those things out. In conclusion, those are very educated guesses, and more often than not, they are spot on -- more fossils discovered late showing the same characteristics. This is why the comparative idea is important. A bump that would indicate attachment of a ligament would be bigger for a very strong… [cont.]

Doesn't the principle of comparative advantage assume a dynamic model in which absolute advantage changes?
Q. For example, suppose I make brooms more cheaply than anyone in north america (I have an absolute advantage). Suppose further than I can meet quantity demanded in the continent. Surely it cannot matter that a mexican broom maker has a comparative advantage. He simply won't be able to sell any if I have an absolute advantage. If I understand correclty, theory will predict that wages will rise in other industries (where US has comparative advantage), and I will have to raise wages to keep my employees until I lose my absolute advantage. At that point my mexican rival will be able to take over the broom market. But this assumes that I do in fact lose my absolute advantage. Comparative advantage alone doesn't meant that my mexican rival… [cont.]
Asked by econtony - Fri Jun 29 18:49:28 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. No. It assumes there is an demand for what is produced, however. Supply shifts out in both countries and the quantity demanded increases. I wouldn't call this 'dynamic'. If the Mexican has a comparative advantage in broom making, that means there is something else you can make better. The Mexican makes brooms because you can grow apples even more than making brooms. You will have more brooms and apples if you grow apples and he makes brooms. Now it could be that the production functions change so that as one person begins making brooms he suddenly has a comparative advantage in growing apples, then things will start to switch and go back and forth like a chaotic system with multiple equilibrium. But it is generally assumed that the… [cont.]

A. Write a successful play essay. Whether it's for exam or coursework, essays based on plays can pose special difficulties. Poetry essays can be difficult because the poems are often tough to interpret; novels can be difficult because they are l-o-n-g; but plays are difficult because they are performed as well as heard: they are written for the stage, not the page. What is the comparative advantage in this case?
Q. Mr. Howell can pick 1 pineapple per hour, or 1 coconut. Mrs. Howell can pick 2 pineapples per hour, but it takes her two hours to pick a coconut. Who has a comparative advantage in picking pineapples? In picking coconuts? Which of the two should specialize in which tasks? Assume that Mr. And Mrs. Howell had originally been separated from each other, and that they originally each spent 12 hours per day working, spending 6 hours picking pineapples and 6 hours picking coconuts. How will their total production change if they find each other and begin to specializing.
Asked by B. - Tue Apr 7 21:55:12 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You can compute each person's efficiency at both tasks thru ratios: In one hour's work: Mr Howell: 1 pineapple / 1 coconut = 1.0 pineapple per coconut Mrs Howell: 2 pineapples / 0.5 coconut = 4.0 pineapples per coconut Mrs Howell's comparative advantage is in picking pineapples, Mrs Howell's comparative advantage is in picking coconuts Mrs Howell should focus on coconuts and Mrs Howell on pineapples Originally, Mr. Howell would have produced 6 pineapples and 6 coconuts, and Mrs. Howell would have produced 12 pineapples and 3 coconuts. So their total production would be 18 pineapples and 9 coconuts. By specializing, In 12 hours, Mrs. Howell will produce 24 pineapples and Mr Howell will produce 12 coconuts. So their total… [cont.]

Q. . Why did the South secede? Discuss the comparative strengths of the North and South. What were the basic strategies of the North and South at the start of the war?
Asked by joseph g - Tue Sep 8 14:02:49 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The South seceded to preserve the rights of states or decide questions such as slavery. The South had perhaps more military talent, and knew its territory better as they were fighting on their home turf. The North had more population, more industry and a stronger navy. The North had the strategy to send forces along the Eastern seaboard and into the Mississippi to control shipping and strangle the South into submission.

What type return should be expected from a managed mutual fund portfolio relative to a comparative index?
Q. Not even sure the question makes sense and have a limited knowledge of how investments work. My quarterly statement from an account with an investment advisor shows my rate of return in a diversified mutual fund portfolio for a 5 year period and it's always lower than a comparative index. 5 points lower for the current year and less than one for the 5 year period. Net of 12.94 for the 5 years is good but should I be getting better from the advisor? Question may be too vague to answer but wanted thoughts from those more knowledgable on investing. Thank you.
Asked by David L - Tue Aug 7 10:40:50 2007 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. OK, the general principle is that you will underperform the index by the amount of fees you are paying. But because fund returns go up and down and some funds are lucky and some unlucky, that is only a general principle. This is why index funds are great. They are low-cost and tax efficient and underperform the market by their expense ratio (internal management fees). Over time, 80% of managed funds underperform the companion index fund. If you didn't pay loads or a higher expense ratio or 12b-1 fees, that number would be much different. Here's a shocking example. I was comparing returns for a VUL - which is a high expense insurance police and also an investment (has mutual funds in it). I compared the return on the S & P 500 fund in… [cont.]

A. Yes. You're allowed to explain and discuss any sort of plot events - in either book - as long as they help support the connection you're trying to make. Though, I would suggest you go a little deeper than just saying that both Hamlet and Holden lost family members, and go into how that loss influenced each of their actions and how they deal/dealt with situations.

Asked by snapcrackleing - Mon Jul 13 01:43:04 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. This is a difficult type of essay because you can only choose the similar things in the book, so I think you should try finding a lot of common things between the book. I recommend doing the plot, theme, characters, do one for each paragraph. The characters could be the running away because in Eragon the main character escapes with Garrow, and in The Thief Lord prosper and bo run away from home. For the plot, talk about the mystical things they include such as a dragon or the stealing of the wing. The theme relates also because in both books they are able to live as happy people and do what ever they intended to do.
