How do you convert Latin adjectives into the comparative and superlative?
Q. Specifically: small and big. How do you convert those two words into the comparative and the superlative? What is the rule? Where can it be found?
Asked by Cdell - Sun Nov 23 15:02:35 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. parvus, parva, -um ... small, little minor, -or, -us ... smaller minimus, -a, -um ... smallest, least magnus, magna, -um ... large, great, big major, -or, -us ... larger, greater maximus, -a, -um ... greatest, largest These are irregular in form. They do not follow the ordinary rule. Ordinarily it would be as follows: longus, longa, -um ... long, tall longior, -ior, -ius ... longer, taller longissimus, -a, -um ... longest, tallest Notice the "-ior, -ius" in the comparative and the "-issimus, -a, -um". Thesee are the usual or normal endings. You can find a fuller explanation in any good Latin grammar book.

A. A lot depends on the thesis statement. If you can come up with a handy thesis statement, that may make organizing the essay easier. For example, if you say "A and B were alike in many ways. They both (whatever) and they both (whatever). Yet they differed as well in three principle ways. (<-- thesis statement). And it was these differences that ended up causing their ultimately different fates. On page 38 we read that A (whatever), whereas on p 76 we see B refusing to do it. Besides the (way the differed in the first paragraph), a second way that A differed from B is that A (wh [cont.]

What kind of jobs can i get with a degree in philosophy/comparative literature?
Q. now I think I pretty much gave up my plan to be a doctor as a result of my abhorrence for any lab-related classes. But i know there isn't much option for my current major right now, which is philosophy and possibly comparative literature as well. Is it even possible to get a decent-paying job with those degrees? Yes, I am planning to enter grad school and further equip myself.

A. Philosophy is a degree you can literally take anywhere, The skills it teaches you are the natural leadership abilities that are in high demand in todays work place (communication, logic, conflict resolution, problem solving, and an ability to adapt to any enviornment). Particularly, philosophy is a good preparation for law school because you deal with ethical as well as metaphysical issues.

I have to write a comparative literature paper, and I have no idea where to start?
Q. For my final paper, I have to write a comparative literature paper on 2 works that we have read in class. I am totally lost on where to start with this. Does anyone have any suggestions??
Asked by Dwarf797 - Wed Mar 3 12:52:30 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Well start off with comparing. Make a list of the common themes of each. Think about the main characters (if there are any), the setting, and most importantly the message that is in each work. Then you can start comparing and contrasting the two. Working at the similarities (how/why are they the same?) and differences (how/why are they different?). That should be a good start for you!

A. Write a successful play essay. Whether it's for exam or coursework, essays based on plays can pose special difficulties. Poetry essays can be difficult because the poems are often tough to interpret; novels can be difficult because they are l-o-n-g; but plays are difficult because they are performed as well as heard: they are written for the stage, not the page. Q. i need tips to writing a comparative essay...for IB.
Asked by 123four - Sun Jun 21 09:24:20 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I wouldn't recommend having other people write essays for you, because you need to write a comparative essay for your IB final. Well, some tips would be to really focus on the prompt, and don't really go off track because the word limit is relatively small. Another thing to be careful about is in-text quotations- don't stick in long quotes from the book/passage just to take up space or because you have nothing to say (I always did...) because the IB examiners mark you down if you are clearly trying to use up the word limit with this. I think its really good if you discuss techinques used in the texts, and compare how similar techniques are used for a common purpose (theme) or something like that. Good luck!

A. A blind belief is a belief you have with no proof of anything. For comparative study, you must compare what is a belief with a blind belief. Analytical: you must take examples, I think, and analyze what is so peculiar with blind belief, and the consequences of a blind belief. I would google it if I had to work on it.

What type return should be expected from a managed mutual fund portfolio relative to a comparative index?
Q. Not even sure the question makes sense and have a limited knowledge of how investments work. A. OK, the general principle is that you will underperform the index by the amount of fees you are paying. But because fund returns go up and down and some funds are lucky and some unlucky, that is only a general principle. This is why index funds are great. They are low-cost and tax efficient and underperform the market by their expense ratio (internal management fees). Over time, 80% of managed funds underperform the companion index fund. If you didn't pay loads or a higher expense ratio or 12b-1 fees, that number would be much different. Here's a shocking example. I was comparing returns for a VUL - which is a high expense insurance police and also an investment (has mutual funds in it). I compared the return on the S & P 500 fund in… [cont.]

A. Yes. You're allowed to explain and discuss any sort of plot events - in either book - as long as they help support the connection you're trying to make. Though, I would suggest you go a little deeper than just saying that both Hamlet and Holden lost family members, and go into how that loss influenced each of their actions and how they deal/dealt with situations.

Asked by snapcrackleing - Mon Jul 13 01:43:04 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. This is a difficult type of essay because you can only choose the similar things in the book, so I think you should try finding a lot of common things between the book. I recommend doing the plot, theme, characters, do one for each paragraph. The characters could be the running away because in Eragon the main character escapes with Garrow, and in The Thief Lord prosper and bo run away from home. For the plot, talk about the mystical things they include such as a dragon or the stealing of the wing. The theme relates also because in both books they are able to live as happy people and do what ever they intended to do.

A. First you gotta decide what factors constitute performance and financial strength. Then, build a spreadsheet with the companies names across the top, down the left side list your performance and financial strength items. Finally, you have to analyze each against the others which becomes a very subjective process. Good Luck
